Although temperature studies indicate a definite warm up at the earth's surface, the same is not true in the atmosphere. Microwave sounding units on board satellites are measuring a low atmospheric temperature that shows no warm up at all. The balloon record replicates this satellite record. "So, it appears the surface is warming, but the atmosphere is not," Balling said. "This situation is not at all like the 'greenhouse pattern,' which theoretically would produce more warming in the satellite record than at the surface."
