A Youth Activities Summit on Education, designed to coordinate as well as encourage educational outreach activities in the geosciences, has been added to annual meeting activities in New Orleans.

The summit will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 15, in the New Orleans Hilton.

All local societies, Sections, regions and committees are "encouraged to participate and have representation" at the session, according to Youth Activities Committee chair Norb Cygan.

"We suggest that you select the person in your organization that is most active in the field of earth science education for K-12 students and teachers, and is positioned properly to organize the overall program for your group," Cygan added.

AAPG members and invited teachers will offer personal experiences in educational outreach programs, and will present opportunities that members may find in local K-12 curriculum, including suggestions for:

  • Textbook review.
  • Classroom presentations.
  • Mentoring.
  • Field trips.
  • Teacher education programs in the earth sciences.

The session also will include:

  • A presentation of AAPG's long-range plan for K-12 outreach.
  • Presentations from those associated with the successful "Rocks in Your Head" and Denver Earth Science Curriculum programs.
  • AAPG's efforts with the Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs.
  • Educational efforts from other geoscience groups, including the AGI, SEG, SEPM, GSA and AGU.
  • A luncheon address by Frank H.T. Rhodes, president emeritus of Cornell University.
  • A presentation from the 2000 AAPG Teacher of the Year Peggy Lubchenco (see February EXPLORER).

The cost of attending the summit is free, but potential participants should contact AAPG headquarters to ensure appropriate preparation.
