Numerical 3D geological models built through the integrated reservoir modeling process (IRM) are an important tool for reserve estimation and for the optimization of field development. The IRM process utilizes multi-disciplinary information obtained from multiple sources at different reservoir scales such as drilled wells data, well tests, 3D seismic surveys etc. The output of these models drives critical investment decisions that may cost billions of dollars.

The Guiana Basin has been described by the US Geological Survey as the as the second most prospective, underexplored offshore oil basin in the world, with an estimated 13.6 billion barrels of oil and 32 trillion cubic feet of natural gas yet to be discovered. It's structurally complex sister basin to the north, the Colombus Basin of Trinidad, which has produced just over 1 billion barrels of oil and 25 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to date from thick Plio-Pleistocene deltaic sands within the Present Day shelf.
