4th International Symposium on Submarine Mass Movements and Their Consequences
8-11 November 2009 – Austin, Texas USA

The 4th International Symposium on Submarine Mass Movements and Their Consequences will be hosted by the Bureau of Economic Geology, Jackson School of Geosciences in Austin, Texas on November 8th -11th , 2009. This symposium is part of an initiative of the International Geoscience Programme (www.unesco.org/science/earth/igcp.shtml) (project 511: www.geohazards.no/IGCP511/ ), a joint endeavor of UNESCO (http://portal.unesco.org/en/ev.php-URL_ID=29008&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html) and the International Union of Geological Sciences <http://www.iugs.org/> . The main objective of this event is to bring a world perspective of submarine mass movements and their consequences by assembling excellent contributions from active international researchers, academic institutions and the oil and gas industry thus providing full coverage of the many scientific and engineering aspects of this type of marine and coastal geo-hazard.
Conference Themes:
- Application of new technologies and techniques to the study of submarine mass movements.
- Role of mass transport processes in margin development.
- Mass movement evolution: From initiation to distal turbidites.
- New approaches to slope stability analysis.
- In situ measurements of pore pressures, deformations, and sediment properties on submarine slopes.
- Mass transport deposits in volcanic island settings.
- Mass transport events and their tsunamigenic risk.
- Impact of mass transport events on benthic ecosystems.
- Impact of mass transport events on sea floor structures / risk and mitigation.
- Mass transport deposits and their role in offshore hydrocarbon field development.
- Hazard assessment of submarine mass movements.
- Current challenges in the study of submarine mass movements and future directions
Technical Conveners:
- Lorena Moscardelli (University of Texas at Austin, USA)
- Craig Shipp (Shell International Exploration, USA)
- Chris Baxter (University of Rhode Island, USA)
- Jason Chaytor (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA)

Please submit your 300 words abstract to: submarinemassmovements4th@gmail.com by October 15th, 2008.
Abstracts will be accepted with expectation of submission of short refereed papers in advance of the conference (see below).
Conference Publication Plans:
We will continue with book publication of the series Submarine Mass Movements and Their Consequences; published by Springer. This publication will be the third such volume, containing peer review papers submitted in advance of the conference. The book will be distributed to conference participants upon check-in.
