Combine business with pleasure. Attend the AAPG conference and holiday in South Africa
To help you decide here are some questions and answers:
Q Why should I attend this AAPG?
A. This is the one international AAPG you should not miss. The Cape Town Organizing Committee and AAPG have worked hard to prepare an exceptionally diverse range of themes, topics and short courses catering for both African and international interests, as well as outstanding field trips which provide easy access to some classic South African geology.
Q Can you provide some examples?
A 1. There will be a focus on African and world wide energy topics such as: deepwater exploration, frontier regions, mature producing provinces, next generation technology, CO2 sequestration, Coal Bed Methane, etc. There are over 600 presentations by some of the worlds leading experts in six concurrent oral sessions plus posters over the three days.
2. With sixteen short courses and eight full field trips, several of which are guaranteed by PetroSA, you are bound to find just the right training component for your trip. Don’t miss exploring the Cape Fold Belt, the classic Tanqua Karoo passive margin outcrops, the geology and scenery of the Cape Peninsula and much more.
3. Climate Change Forum – a first-ever open-to-the-public debate (sponsored by Shell).
4. Proactive social responsibility programme.
5. An outstanding spouse and social programme, which includes Geotours of the Cape Winelands, The Cape of Good Hope, and World Heritage sites of Table Mountain and Robben Island.
Q Will I be safe?
A You will be as safe, if not safer, than in any big city in the world. Cape Town CBD is covered by CCTV cameras and tourist safety is taken very seriously by the authorities. However, keep jewellery to a minimum and be discrete with cameras, phones and electronic equipment as would any seasoned traveler in a foreign country.
Q What about the recent unrest in South Africa?
A. The media tends to exaggerate these things but the recent unrest has been mainly the result of poverty and unemployment following years ofuncontrolled migration (legal and illegal) from neighboring and more distant African countries in search of better opportunities. Tourists are welcome and always have been.
Q Should I bring my spouse?
A. Absolutely yes! Spouse activities are very varied – culturally and scenically. There are so many tourist attractions in Cape Town and environs, ranging from mountains and beaches, whale watching and penguins, to vineyards and shopping, culture and cuisine. Experience first hand the vibrant and exciting multi-cultures of South Africa. You might even be fortunate enough to catch the tail end of the famed spring wild flowers.
Q What about the weather?
A. October is spring time in the Western Cape. The weather can be somewhat changeable so bring something windproof, something warm as well as something for summer weather. Dress code is always relaxed.
You will find South Africans friendly, helpful, hospitable and fun!
