Imperial Barrel Award Competition

Steve Veal

Universities within the Europe Region who are interested in participating in next year’s Imperial Barrel Award competition are directed to contact the Europe Region Office, or email Mike Mlynek at students@aapg.org. Watch for the latest information on the competition.

The competition is designed for graduate student teams who, given standardized datasets, work as an exploration team to indentify hydrocarbon leads, making presentations to judges who are industry professionals. This well received program(created andrun for the past 30 years at Imperial College) was first tested at the AAPG National Convention in Long Beach and is expanding with sectional and regional programs for 2008.

Winners of the sectional and regional competitions receive travel and hotel costs to compete at the AAPG National Convention in San Antonio, Texas, April 19 & 20th, 2008. Universities will compete for scholarship funds (2007 totals where $20,000 for 1st place, $10,000 for 2nd place, and $5,000 for 3rd place).

Last year’s winners were:

  1. University of Aberdeen (Europe Region),
  2. Imperial College of London (Europe Region) and
  3. University of Oklahoma (Midcontinent section).

This program is sponsorship dependent and prizes will vary. Those companies or individuals interested in sponsoring the Europe Region program are directed to contact the Europe Region Office or Steven Sonnenberg at: sasonnenbg@aol.com.
