Mike Mlynek, AAPG Student Affairs/Visiting Geoscientist Program Coordinator,
can be contacted by email at students@aapg.org. When asked the question “Why you should form an AAPG Student Chapter,” the following is his response:

“I am often asked questions about the differences between AAPG Student membership, and being a member of an AAPG Student Chapter and what are the advantages to being associated with an AAPG Student Chapter.

My message here is simple; you should strive to form a Student Chapter at your University so you can benefit from the many different programs that are in place for Student Chapters. As an AAPG Student member you receive the monthly AAPG Explorer, have online access to the AAPG Bulletin through the Members Only page of the AAPG website, receive discounts on publications, reduced fees for meeting registration and courses, and have the ability to apply for the Grants-in Aid program.

However, there are additional benefits from having an AAPG Student Chapter. These include access to the L. Austin Weeks Grant, Student Chapter Book Gift Program, Membership and Travel Rebates, along with the possibility of winning one of the Outstanding Student Chapter Awards given yearly. Most importantly, the advantage of having a group of members working together. Plus, travel to Student Expo events, field trips, and AAPG meetings is usually much easier.

It is easy to form an AAPG Student Chapter, for more information and instructions on how to form a Student Chapter please visit: http://www.aapg.org/member/student/index.cfm.

There are currently over 130 AAPG Student Chapters worldwide accomplishing great things. It is time for your University to join in. Please feel free to contact me and let’s work together to establish an AAPG Student Chapter at your school. “
