Associated Societies
All Associated Societies are welcome to place meeting information here. Unfortunately, I was not able to contact each associated society. If would like to at least place the name of your society with a contact E-mail address, please send your information to the editor, whose E-mail address you will find on the final page of this document.
Austrian Geological Society (AGS) or Osterreichische Geologische Geseloschaft (OGG)
The current president is Wolfgang Nachtmann. You can contact him at one of the following E-mail addresses - Email1 wolfgang.nachtmann@rohoel.at or Email2 oegg@geologie.ac.at. Wolfgang is also the Austrian House of Delegate member to the AAPG.
Information about speakers and meetings are announced when they come available. This information can be viewed at www.geologes.at. This website is in German and English; however the German version is more informative than the English version. They do intend to improve the English version in the future.
The last week of June, AAPG Distinguished Lecturer, Mr. Mateu Estaban, is expected to speak. Since no specific date has been set, please see the website listed above for an exact time and location.
Every other year, there is a larger joint conference held with other Austrian Geoscience Societies - geologic, paleontologic, mineralogic, hydrologic. It will be held this year on September 17-20 in Innsbruck, Austria. for more information see PANGEO Austria 2006 at www.uibk.ac.at/geologie/pangeo/.
Austrian Journal of Earth Sciences Publications, AJES, are published in English. A list, other information and free downloads of these publications can be found at www.univie.ac.at/ajes/.
In addition, there is a Geoscience Technology Training Center (GTTC) at the Geoscience Institute of Vienna University which is jointly operated by AGS and the Institute. The GTTC provides short courses for academia as well as for industry. Although the current activity level is not high, the infrastructure is there and the two Austrian oil companies, OMV (www.omv.com) and RAG (www.rohoel.at), support the GTTC by having courses there which they make available to the rest of industry. A fee is charged for industry but is usually free to students. Industry can also rent the GTTC facility for professional courses. You can view information about the GTTC site at the following website: www.gttc-vienna.at.

Swiss Association of Petroleum Geologists and Engineers
This society has about 280 members. The society consists of about two thirds Swiss and one third other nationalities such as German, Dutch, Austrian, British and French. See their website at www.vsp-asp.ch. The current president is Dr. Peter Burri, email at peterburri.geol@bluewin.ch.
Their main event is an annual convention which usually consists of Saturday afternoon technical presentations followed by a 2 day excursion on Sunday and Monday. Last year they looked at the 57 km Gotthard Railway Tunnel. This included one day underground, looking at the engineering work and geologic challenges and the second day, above ground, concentrating on the geology.
This year the convention is June 17-19 and will be in Rheinfelden near Basel. The topics are the Geology of the Rhinegraben and the Geothermal Project near Basel, a 5000 m well. In addition, they will look at the some spectacular Saurier tracks discovered in the Jura Mountains.
The association is trying to attract more members, particularly from the oil patch and have decided to hold the above meeting in English. If you are interested in going to this very interesting meeting, please contact Dr. Burri.
