Letter from the Editor

As editor, I have decided to review one AAPG committee per newsletter. The objective is to acquaint each of you with the variety of committees available and perhaps you will find one interesting enough to participate in.

The first committee will be Honors and Awards. When I was at the convention in Houston, a member from Africa asked me why there were no awardees from Africa. I told her that each member honored has had their name submitted to the appropriate committee. This means someone has to submit the member’s name. The following quote is from the AAPG Web site where there are some 22 possible member awards, including 4 student awards, that a name can be submitted to: “The Honors and Awards program of AAPG provides a means for recognizing outstanding achievements and contributions by professional geologists, especially in the area of exploration for petroleum and energy mineral resources, and by other professionals who further the goals and objectives of our science, our profession and our Association. The Motivation toward scientific and professional achievement which such recognition stimulates is much to be desired.”

If you know someone whose AAPG works and deeds fit the above statement, go to the AAPG Honors and Awards Web site and make a nomination.

On the navigation bar on the left is an active link list of 18 member awards and 4 Student awards. Spend sometime looking at each award to see which would best fit your needs. As you select each award, it will bring up a page with active links to award definitions and requirements and an online nomination application (where applicable) to submit the name of the member you think qualifies for the award.

The call for nominations is made each year by July 1. I hope you will submit a member name this year.
