This course is ideal for individuals who want to learn about unconventional resources.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to analyze, compare, and contrast unconventional petroleum reserves in the United States and to identify emerging areas in the world. You will be able to identify major plays, describe the productive formations, and to discuss the technologies that are implemented in order for the formation to produce gas in sufficiently quantities to be economically viable.

Unconventional oil and gas resources represent a significant resource for the future, particularly as technological innovations make reservoir characterization more accurate, and completion / production techniques more cost-effective.

Course Structure
This course is offered at the beginning of every month. You may sign up for it at any time, and your course will begin the first day of the upcoming month. This course is designed to be equivalent to a 3 credit-hour graduate-level seminar. It is a 4-week online course which consists of 4 one-week units that involve readings, multimedia, guiding questions, and assignments for you to do and to email to your instructor. You will receive feedback from your instructor, and upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate.
- Unit I: Definition of Unconventionals
- Unit II: Shale Gas
- Unit III: Shale Oil
- Unit IV: Coalbed Methane, Other Unconventionals
Required Work: For each unit, readings, research/review of recent articles, and a short paper in response to guiding questions.
