Over 40 years
of exploration for oil and gas in North Africa have yielded prolific
reserves in Palaeozoic, and latterly, Triassic reservoirs. While exploration
has demonstrated the diversity and complexity of both play types and
petroleum systems, seismic imaging remains a key challenge in exploring
several major plays. Analysis of the sequence stratigraphy of both
the Palaeozoic and Triassic is crucial to reservoir prediction at
both basin and field scales. Fracturing is equally important in addressing
development especially in Palaeozoic plays as is an understanding
of the case histories of established fields.
Key questions to be addressed
during the conference include:
-
Source
rocks and basin modelling
-
Plays
and petroleum system of the Palaeozoic and Triassic
-
Sequence
stratigraphy of the Palaeozoic and Triassic
-
Structural
history of North Africa
-
Reservoir
characterisation including fracturation
-
Seismic
challenges for Exploration and Production
-
Field
case histories
The conference
will be opened by a plenary session that will overview the Exploration
History of the North African Saharan Platform. The timing of the proposed
meeting is appropriate as exploration of Palaeozoic systems continues
to broaden across North Africa and into the Middle East. A more profound
understanding of the key elements of the Palaeozoic and Triassic petroleum
systems will have wide application across the region and also in other
formerly connected Palaeozoic basins.
