The Geologic Occurrence and Hydraulic Significance of Fractures in Reservoirs

This will be a four-and-a-half day meeting with keynote speakers, oral presentations, open discussions, and field excursions. There will also be an optional post-conference field trip.

The Conference emphasis will be devoted to provoking discussion, capturing salient results, and developing a forward looking plan for improving the state of the science in fractured reservoirs.

Tentative Sessions:

Detecting and characterizing fractures and faults from borehole, geophysical, and engineering data
Session Chairs:Laird Thompson (consultant) and Colin Sayers (Schlumberger)
Geologic controls on fracture and fault development
Session Chairs:Peter Hennings (ConocoPhillips Technology) and Jim Evans (Utah State University)
Geologic controls on fracture and fault permeability
Session Chairs:Mark Zoback (Stanford University) and Steve Laubach (Bureau of Economic Geology)
How to capture appropriate complexity and physics in reservoir simulation
Session Chairs:Hossein Kazemi (Colorado School of Mines) and Jim Gilman (iReservoir)
Representing fractures and faults in reservoir models: geomechanical and other predictive approaches
Session Chairs:Jon Olson (University of Texas) and Brett Freeman (Badley Geoscience)
Representing fractures and faults in reservoir models: DFN methods and other statistical approaches
Session Chairs:Chris Zahm (Bureau of Economic Geology) and Stephan Matthai (Imperial College)
Tying it together: exploring for and managing fractured reservoirs
Session Chairs:Paul LaPointe (Golder Associates) and TBD

Mid-Conference Field Trips

Oil Mountain Anticline:
a case study on fracture development within tightly stratified low net-to-gross sandstone reservoirs
Trip Leaders:
Peter Hennings (ConocoPhillips Technology) and Chris Zahm (Bureau of Economic Geology)
Alcova Reservoir:
a case study highlighting the complexities of fracture characterization, development and predictability within a folded, high net-to-gross clastic reservoir
Trip Leaders:
Chris Zahm (Bureau of Economic Geology) and Peter Hennings (ConocoPhillips Technology)

Post-Conference Field Trip (optional)

Circle Ridge Anticline:
delineation and quantification of flow pathways in a fractured sandstone reservoir for IOR through the integration of 3D palinspastic reconstruction, outcrop fracture studies, subsurface fracture logs, tracer tests and production data, NW Wind River Basin, WY.
Trip Leaders:
Paul LaPointe (Golder Associates) and Brendan Curran (EnCana Oil&Gas)
