AAPG/SPE/SEG Joint Hedberg
The Geologic Occurrence and Hydraulic Significance of Fractures in Reservoirs
July 14-18, 2008
Casper, Wyoming • USA
Conference Conveners:
- Hossein Kazemi
- Colorado School of Mines
- Paul LaPointe
- Golder Associates
- Colin Sayers
- Schlumberger
- Laird Thompson
- consultant
- Chris Zahm
- The University of Texas, Bureau of Economic Geology
- Mark Zoback
- Stanford University
The principal focus of the conference is to openly discuss the state of the science and future demands concerning our ability to detect fractures and faults, characterize their hydraulic impact, and model effectively their impact on hydrocarbon exploitation. We encourage participants from the oil industry, universities, research institution and development companies to participate by presenting compelling research, case studies or by participating in an engaging dialogue on these topics:
- What are the geologic controls that govern fracture formation and their hydraulic behavior?
- What are our best current approaches to detect fractures from geophysical and wellbore data?
- How can we more effectively utilize geomechanics in predicting, characterizing, and modeling fractured reservoirs?
- What level of characterization is required to properly assess fracture behavior and how should this information be depicted in geomodels and accounted for in flow simulations?
- What should we be doing to better understand the physics of fluid flow in fractured reservoirs?
- How can we effectively close the feedback loop between fracture characterization, modeling, and simulation?
- How should our paradigms evolve to better position ourselves for success in exploring for and managing fractured reservoirs?
- How can we better prepare future geoscientists and engineers to face these challenges?
