Who Should Attend

This course is aimed at the geoscientist, specifically 'new hires' and those who have recently graduated or completed graduate school, placing academic knowledge in a petroleum geoscience context and bridge the gap between college/university and the activities of the professional exploration geoscientist. This course is an excellent primer within the broad area of petroleum exploration!

Objectives

At the end of this short course participants will understand:

• the process of oil generation, source rock characteristics
• the role of economics and the need to assess risk
• seismic wave propagation and processing
• how to drill a well
• how wells are appraised, tested and completed
• the complexities of production and completion options
• how to derive Sw, Swir, Vshale, Rt, Kro and other log derived parameters

Content

Using a combination of presentations, mini-workshops and group activity, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of petroleum geoscience. Participants will emerge from this short course with enhanced level of understanding of petroleum exploration and the role of the petroleum geoscientist and develop a solid foundation of understanding that will be easier to enhance at some later date.

This is a very broad-based course that spans the breadth of petroleum geoscience through a combination of talks, demonstrations, mini-workshops and group activities Specific topics covered by this three-day short course include:

• past, current and future market trends and their impact on the industry
• the formation and occurrence of petroleum
• hydrocarbon traps, seals reservoir characteristics
• an introduction to subsurface pressure regimes
• exploration economics, risk assessment
• geophysical analysis and basic seismic interpretation
• oil field technology and the mechanisms of drilling a well
• reservoir appraisal and completion
• production, and enhanced oil recovery
• petrophysical log analysis

This short course will provide a foundation of knowledge upon which participants will be able to build. Participants will emerge with a solid grasp of the breadth and depth of the multi-faceted world of the petroleum geoscientist. A copy of the AAPG Petroleum Geology eTextbook by Stephen L. Bend will be provided to each participant.
