EMD Focuses on Oil Sands and Unconventional Reservoirs at the 2016 ACE in Calgary

AAPG's Energy Minerals Division (EMD) will have a strong contribution to the conference theme of "Redefining Reservoir" at the 2016 AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition, set June 19-22 in Calgary, Alberta (plus pre- and post-events). The conference includes a wide variety of oral and poster sessions (under 10 separate themes), short courses, field trips, forum opportunities, luncheons and special sessions. Also, the CSPG International Core Conference will be held on June 23-24.

While showcasing EMD's diversity with energy minerals, the EMDs two sponsored themes review integrated approaches in developing both Oil Sands and Unconventional Reservoirs.

The Oil Sands theme focuses on Responsibly Exploring and Developing Vast Bitumen Resources. Topics include:

  • New Methods of Development
  • Reservoir Characterization
  • Case Studies
  • Aquifer Characterization
  • Caprice Integrity
  • International Oil Sands Prospects

The Unconventional Resources theme focuses on Continuously Evolving and Expanding What We Know and Exploring What We Don't for both unconventional plays and other energy minerals. Topics include:

  • Application of Microscale Techniques for Unconventional Plays (Pore Systems).
  • Condensate and Dry Gas Unconventional Plays.
  • Tight Oil and Gas Plays.
  • Reservoir Characterization and Modeling of Resource Play.
  • Geostatistical Approaches: Uncertainty and Risk Management in Plays.
  • Advancement in Technology in Unconventional Plays.
  • Other Energy Minerals I: Uranium, Geothermal and Gas Hydrates.
  • Other Energy Minerals II: Coal, CBM and Oil Shale.
  • New Views of the Solar System.

As an EMD member, we suggest you consider submitting an abstract as well as encourage your colleagues who may not be EMD members to submit abstracts for consideration under the Unconventional Resources theme and/or the Oil Sands theme. Note that submitting an abstract does not guarantee acceptance. The success of our themes will depend on the abstracts we receive. Also, as the subthemes are placeholders until the final abstracts are reviewed (e.g. rename as per focus), any submissions or ideas that do not fit in any of the subthemes can be a new opportunity for an interesting session.

Contact for any inquiries about the program.
