Technical Advisory Committee
Mission
July 1, 2006
Approved:
Development of a new standing committee—“Technical Advisory Committee.”
Need:
AAPG technical programs are not consistent in quality and scope.
Purpose:
To provide support for existing AAPG committees, in particular the Annual Convention and Exhibition (ACE) Technical Program Committee and the International Conference and Exhibition (ICE) Technical Program Committee, in the development of their active programs. Also, recommendations on professional education and training will be provided to pertinent AAPG committees.
Mission:
The Technical Advisory Committee (TechAd) will provide information to AAPG technical program committees on current technical trends and topics in petroleum geoscience and related disciplines. The committee will recommend resources for development of AAPG programs, including recommendations of volunteers such as speakers and technical program session chairs. In addition, the Technical Advisory Committee will be asked form time to time to provide technical information and resources to various other AAPG committees, such as the Distinguished Lecturer and Research committees.
People:
The chair of the committee should be an active AAPG member distinguished by their ability to recognize technical excellence and preferably a past chair of a convention organizing committee or technical program committee. The chair should have great organizational skills and should be willing to commit the time to developing this program. It is recommended that current and future chairs of the ICE and ACE technical program committees be represented (4 total, each with 2-year terms). In addition, the committee should include chairs of the Distinguished Lecturer and Research committees. Other members should include top geoscientists and AAPG members from the following:
- 4-5—one from each major petroleum corporation
- 3-4—from independents
- 2-4—from universities with good geoscience and/or petroleum programs
- 1-3—from major vendors
- 1-2—consultants.
Out of the above group each Division and the SEPM should have representatives. The size of the committee is limited to 25 total members.
Authority:
The Technical Advisory Committee is defined as an advisory committee; however, the AAPG Executive Committee expects this new standing committee to have influence and work especially with the ACE and ICE technical program committees in developing the highest quality programs possible. In other words, the convention technical program committees will decide the ultimate content of their program, but the Executive Committee expects the advice from the TechAd Committee to be seriously considered and its resources implemented into technical programs.
Timing:
This committee should be officially formed no later than October 1, 2006. It will immediately start work on advising the Long Beach 2007 Technical Program Committee and the Athens 2007 and Cape Town 2008 ICE technical program.
