Background of the RDRG
The AAPG Reservoir Deformation Research Group (RDRG) is part of the AAPG Research Committee’s effort to bring to the membership new advances and concepts that support exploration and production. The initial aim of the RDRG was to reach across disciplinary boundaries, so that the group's mandate is not strictly structural geology.
Since its inception, the RDRG has been the leading forum at the national convention for scientists and practitioners with interests in structure, mechanics, fluid flow and their interfaces with engineering, rock mechanics, and geophysics. The group meetings provide an informal setting that promotes discussion and interaction between academic and industry researchers on structural geology and related exploration and development issues.
The RDRG group first met unofficially in Dallas in 1997 and officially with Research Committee support during the AAPG annual meeting in Salt Lake City. Subsequently, successful Research Committee-sponsored meetings were held in San Antonio, New Orleans, Denver, Houston, Salt Lake, and Dallas. Attendance has been consistently over 70.
Meetings are structured around a brief introductory presentation or presentations followed by extended, lively discussion. The program for the annual meeting is developed by the meeting chair, co-chair, and the Research Committee liaison to the RDRG.
The co-chair for the next meeting is selected at the annual meeting. Meeting leadership alternates between academic and industry representatives.
Everyone is welcome to attend and to contribute to the discussion. Meetings are usually held on the Tuesday evening of the annual meeting.
