Hedberg Research Conferences—Background
AAPG has been holding Technical Research Conferences since October of 1974, in many locations and on many topics. They were renamed Hedberg Research conferences in 1989, after Hollis Hedberg, a geologist and long-time member of AAPG. He died in 1988, and the program was named after him to honor his memory and all the work he had done with AAPG over the years.
The first International Hedberg Conference was held in Paris, France in July of 1992, and since then we have had additional International conferences in England, Canada, Mexico, China, Brazil, Egypt, Venezuela, South Africa, Argentina, Italy, Norway, Australia, Algeria, and Azerbaijan. We also continue to hold conferences the US.
Typically AAPG sponsors between 3 and 5 Hedberg Conferences per calendar year. These conferences are different from major AAPG conventions in that they focus on a specific topic area, and provide a forum for interaction among outstanding scientists working within that topic as a way to advance the science, exchange information, discuss common problems and new developments, and try to determine what the future holds.
Meetings should be: (1) on the general subject of energy, the environment, or related issues of interest to the mission of AAPG, (2) likely to have significant scientific, technical, and societal impact, (3) timely in terms of new advances or the potential to generate new advances in science, technology, data, changed exploration opportunities, etc., (4) clearly defined in terms of scope and goals, (5) proposed by professionals with sufficient stature and position to draw a critical mass of participants, and (6) have an appropriate budget and fee structure.
