Internship in Geosciences

The Savannah River Technology Center at the Department of Energy site in Aiken, South Carolina is currently looking for a summer intern to support their Environmental Restoration Technology Group. The technology center is operated by Westinghouse Savannah River Company. The technology center is looking for an individual to support environmental restoration projects who is broadly interdisciplinary in the geosciences with specific interest in geochemical processes. This individual would work with a group of multidisciplinary scientists (geologists, hydrogeologists, engineers, mathematicians, microbiologists) on focus areas such as support for characterization of waste sites, remediation design and integration of geology and hydrogeology into these projects. Responsibilities would include assisting technology center personnel in field work, analytical work, data analysis, and report preparation.

Minimum requirements – PhD or Master’s degree students are encouraged to apply. Emphasis in geochemistry in ongoing or planned research is essential with a background in geology or hydrogeology preferred.

Geochemist

The Savannah River Technology Center at the Department of Energy site in Aiken, South Carolina is currently looking for a geochemist to support their Environmental Restoration Technology Group. The technology center is operated by Westinghouse Savannah River Company (WSRC). The technology center is looking for an individual who is broadly interdisciplinary in the geosciences with specific talents in geochemical processes. This would involve fate and transport soil and groundwater modeling related to technology deployments, remediation projects, and general research and development. Expertise in organic contaminants is preferred. Primary focus areas will include support for characterization of waste sites, remediation design and integration of geology and hydrogeology into these projects. Responsibilities will include field work, analytical work, data analysis, oral presentations, and report preparation. Collaboration with people from a wide spectrum of disciplines (engineering, hydrogeology, sedimentology, microbiology, etc), will be required for proposal development, project execution, and referred journal publication.

Minimum requirements - M.S. Degree with emphasis in geochemistry plus 2 years experience with environmental geochemistry. Background in geology or hydrogeology is preferred. Knowledge of the processes of contaminant transport in the subsurface is preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.

DIRECTOR/STATE GEOLOGIST -

UTAH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY

POSITION OVERVIEW

Provides direction and leadership to the Utah Geological Survey statewide programs including Applied Geology (engineering, hazards), Environmental Sciences (groundwater, paleontology), Mapping Geology, Economic Geology, and Geologic Extension Service. Reports to Executive Director, Department of Natural Resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serve as an advocate in defending and implementing UGS Board policies.

Work with legislature and other elected officials to define and implement state policies, statutes, and rules.

• Responsible for preparation of division budget and assure consistency with Executive Director's budget guidelines.

• Coordinate and communicate division goals and direction with other state, federal, and local agencies and organizations to maximize benefits.

• Develop and implement guidelines, time frames, and accuracy levels for division programs and strategies.

• Oversee all division personnel matters, develop performance plans and evaluations for subordinates.

• Direct negotiations of agreements providing for cost-sharing or cooperative funding for geologic studies and mineral resource inventories.

• Evaluate and promote all geological resources of the state.

• Review and approve technical geologic reports, maps, and manuscripts for publication.

• Direct and conduct geological investigations for complex and sensitive problem areas.

• Promote scientific and ethical standards.

• Oversee hazard and engineering geology related to public safety response and mitigation.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Ten years professional employment in geological field, including six years of progressive managerial experience.

• Bachelor's degree (Master's/Ph.D. preferred) in geology or closely related field.

• Knowledge of geologic principles and techniques.

• Knowledge of state and national scientific trends in the geological field.

• Knowledge of (and experience working with) local, state, and federal political process.

• Proven administrative, leadership, and interpersonal effectiveness.

• Excellent communication skills including writing, public speaking, meeting facilitation, media and public relations.

The ideal candidate will have a good track record in all phases of development and production work. He/she will work on a multi-displinary asset team that will include a petrophysicist, seismic interpreter and a modeling/AVO/Inversion specialist. We work closely with a group of reservoirs engineers, who scale our static 3D models and provide business guidance through "what-if" evaluation of reservoir simulations.

We use the latest Schlumberger GeoQuest software as well as Hampson Russell Emerge in our reservoir characterization studies. While familiarity with Stratlog/WellPix etc. would be ideal, a strong workstation background in other software would also be considered. Some geostatistics is also required.

Expertise preferably on drilling rigs in working with programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) (in French, Automates Programmable Industrials). Preferably Siemens Step 7 and/or Mitsubishi A Series and/or Cegelec Alspa. Work with computer Man Machine interfaces networks, such as Panorama, Factory, Link, etc. Must be fluent in English and able to write technical reports. Be able to work independently. Work 100% on drilling rigs (both on and offshore in various parts of the world. Move from rig to rig to support/troubleshoot operations. Rotation schedule of time on/time off on rigs variable. Write and modify PLC software used in the control of complex processes. May involve supervision of rig construction and commission in shipyard.
