ICE SC 1 | Applied Biostratigraphy - The Value of Biostratigraphy in Hydrocarbon Exploration, Development and Production.
American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)
Saturday, 14 October 2017, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. | London, England
Who Should Attend
Industry geoscientists and engineers wishing to learn more about the value of biostratigraphy in exploration and production workflows. Early career professionals are particularly welcome.
Objectives
Learning outcomes:
- understand the role biostratigraphy plays in the E&P process and workflow, and also its use in operational (real-time drilling) situations
- demonstrate how to practically effect biostratigraphic principles such as correlation and environmental determination
- synthesize this knowledge to effect an integrated sequence analysis of a geological section
- evaluate and Q/C third-party biostratigraphic data and apply confidence levels to various intervals
- use integrated and synthesized data to construct a chronostratigraphic chart
- construct more a detailed geological synthesis of a region revealing potential new play types
- use biostratigraphic data to assist in “horizontal biosteering” in an extended-reach production well
Course Content
To introduce modern concepts, principles and applications of biostratigraphy to industry geoscientists and engineers with a non-biostratigraphic background. This is not a course about palaeontology, it’s a course about how biostratigraphy can be employed to find and produce more hydrocarbons cost-effectively.
The intention is to show non-biostratigraphers what kinds of biostratigraphic tools are available to them in the overall exploration workflow, in operational (drilling) situations and to overcome production challenges. The course demonstrates how to read and evaluate biostratigraphic data and, by applying basic knowledge, maximise the value of that data. It allows them to work with the biostratigraphic data generated by paleontological specialists. Techniques to identify fossil species are not included in this course.
Topics covered:
- What is biostratigraphy and what is its role in the E&P workflow?
- Biostratigraphic correlation
- Reconstructing paleoenvironments
- Biostratigraphy and sequence analysis
- Constructing chronostratigraphic charts and enhance prediction skills
- Operational biostratigraphy
