From oral and poster presentations that provide cutting-edge research in key geoscience disciplines to the latest results from the hottest exploration areas, Cape Town will be the place to be in 2008. Our technical program will feature the newest tools and techniques, best practices workshops and the rising stars of industry and academia – not just for Africa, but for the entire globe! The world-class exposures of the Karoo deepwater sandstones and fluvial coals, the Cape Fold Belt Structure and scenic coast of South Africa will attract worldwide participation. We will offer an outstanding array of pre- and post-conference technical courses that will cover both conventional and frontier energy resources.

Theme 1:
Deepwater Reservoir Systems – A Global Perspective

Geoscientists like you will discuss their new ideas on how to address challenges of the deepwater realm. This includes oral presentations and posters on deepwater outcrop analogs, using high resolution seismic data, experimental and numerical modeling of deepwater processes, modern systems and new models for deepwater exploration. Engineers tasked with developing and producing these sometimes problematic reservoirs will provide hands-on case studies you need to see.

Theme 2:
Global Advances in Geosciences

You will want to attend the oral and poster sessions on carbonate reservoir systems showcasing reservoir characterization studies from offshore Angola, Brazil, Indonesia, China, Russia, and the U.S., as well as new insights on modern analogs, digital outcrop models as reservoir analogs, forward stratigraphic and diagenetic modeling and reservoir modeling. Oral and poster sessions on deepwater carbonate systems and reservoirs highlight modern and ancient deepwater mound systems, cool water carbonate systems and stratigraphic-facies models for varied slope to basin settings. Don’t miss the special session on injectites and mud volcanoes, including papers about the widely press-reported Lusi mud volcano of Indonesia.

Black Rhino

Theme 3:
Next Generation Tools and Techniques

New tools and workflows will be provided for your use as discussed by specialists from industry and academia covering a broad range of technical disciplines. Innovative seismic detection and visualization techniques, insights from 4D seismic CSEM, emerging geochemical techniques for reservoir characterization, gravity/magnetics, hydrocarbon reserve assessment and new methods for illuminating deep basin diagenesis are among the technologies, best practices and methods that will be discussed.

Theme 4:
The New Business of Energy: Global Coal, CBM, Gas Hydrates, Uranium, CO2, and Remediation

The new business of energy will take you into the evolving realm of frontier resources. Traditional sources like coal and oil shale are discussed, but are complemented by papers on the future potential of gas hydrates, coalbed methane and basin-centered gas. The challenges of understanding seal rocks in CO2 reservoir storage sites are described. Special forums on climate change and the looming demographic gap will be well-attended as you search for future business guides in a time of economic transition. Successful independents will exchange their thoughts on operating in Africa and globally.

Water Buffalo

Theme 5:
Gondwana and Pangean Petroleum Systems: Africa, Middle East, South Atlantic, Caspian, Mediterranean, Arctic, and Asia-Pacific

Here’s your chance to see over 100 different basins in the regional exploration, development and production sessions, from the circum-Arctic to the South Atlantic, from South-East Asia to East Africa. Key sessions will highlight what your competitors are doing in the Middle East and how people are achieving results in West Africa by investigating regional tectonics, stratigraphy and petroleum systems. Find out about the latest discoveries, understand the new play concepts, and learn from recent exploration failures.
