Social Responsibility

AAPG has placed a strong commitment on social responsibility both globally and in South Africa. The local Organizing Committee created a Social Responsibility Sub-Committee, charged with finding ways for the conference to give back to the community, reduce the impact on the environment and be a responsible citizen of both the oil and gas and local communities.

There will be several initiatives including space to exhibit the products of local, formerly disadvantaged craftspeople. These spaces will display local handicrafts and cultural artifacts and some will be available for sale, thus creating jobs. Another part of the conference’s corporate social responsibility will be collecting surplus and unwanted items such as delegate bags, pens, paper and exhibitors’ materials.

All collected material will be distributed to deserving organizations in less affluent districts of Greater Cape Town. Such material is always well received and put to great use in the townships. Surplus food will be distributed to the needy and there will be a recycling effort for exhibitors’ shipping materials.

As a component of the Social Responsibility program, the AAPG Global Climate Change Committee will host a special Forum on Global Climate Change on Tuesday evening – which will be open to the public. Internationally-known experts in climate research will be on-hand to present their views on the scientific basis for climate change. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and express their concerns.
