The Geological Society of South Africa
Founded in 1895
The Geological Society of South Africa is proud to co-host the next AAPG international meeting in Cape Town, South Africa. South Africa is one of the leading economic powers in Africa, and has been through fifteen years of econonomic and political growth, no doubt with more to come. Cape Town is at the center of the South African oil and gas industry, as well as being a global tourism destination, and is the ideal place to stage “African Energy, Global Impact.”
The Geological Society of South Africa is the main professional earth science society in southern Africa, serving as a professional home for earth science professionals working and living in the region, or for anyone who has an interest in African geology. Founded in the early days of South Africa’s diamond and gold mining industries, the Society continues to promote greater understanding of African geology, as well as overseeing the professional interests of the region’s working earth scientists.
The Society advances, promotes and serves the earth science community in southern Africa by:
- Promoting professionalism
- Fostering education
- Promoting and sponsoring research and development
- Representing member interests on governmental, industrial and scientific bodies
- Supporting and promoting publication of Earth Science literature
- Supporting and fostering geoconservation
- Hosting and co-hosting of Annual Meetings/Trade Shows and international conferences such as:
- SEG-GSSA 2008 – Annual Meeting (Geoforum 2008) and co-host of the international conference with the Society of Economic Geologists, Gauteng, July 2008
- AAPG-GSSA – co-host of the international conference with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and GSSA Western Cape Branch, Cape Town, 26 – 29 October 2008
- IGEO-GSSA – co-host of the international conference with International Geosciences Education Organisation 2010.
