This field trip combines the scenic beauty of South Africa’s Garden Route with the geological evolution of a Gondwana break-up coastline. The tectono-sedimentary history of the Cretaceous Heidelberg and Oudtshoorn Basins, which are onland equivalents of the offshore Pletmos and Bredasdorp Basins, will be the key focus along the route from Cape Town to the Mossel Bay/Oudtshoorn area. Outcrops of the Late Tertiary marine and aeolian units of the Bredasdorp Group near Bredasdorp and Arniston will also be examined. Highlights on the trip  include visits to the southernmost tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas, crossing the scenic Cape Fold Belt mountain ranges several times. Further, a visit to Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world and a tour of the PetroSA gas-to-liquids refinery at Mossel Bay, the largest operating GTL refinery in the world, will add to an unforgettable experience in this part of the world.

Please note that the Geological and Social Day Trips may be of interest to guests.
