The Zerrissene Turbidite System, Namibia: Sedimentology of a Large Basin Plain Turbidite Complex

Gemsbok River Formation
Overview of westward-vergent, overturned folds developed in the deepwater carbonate Gemsbok River Formation (light grey). The ephemeral Ugab River is in the foreground with abandoned meanders of the river located 40 m above the level of the present river. The Zerrissene Mountains lie in the background. Photo courtesy of Roger Swart.
Date:
Monday, 20 October, 08:00 – Friday, 24 October, 18:00
(departs from and returns to Windhoek, Namibia)
Leader:
Roger Swart (Consultant, Windhoek, Namibia)
Fee sold out
Includes:
Transportation, guidebook, two nights lodging in Windhoek (B+B) and all meals in the field. Participants are on own to make their way to and from Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, arriving on Sunday, 19 October and departing on Saturday, 25 October.
Limit:
Maximum 15; Minimum 10
Note:
Visas are required for Namibia. Short, medium and long walks, some mildly strenuous are expected. Proper clothing needed for camping/sleeping in the open. Warm to very hot conditions are expected during daytime, cool at night.

This field excursion explores the architecture of the passive-margin, basin-plain Zerrissene Turbidite Complex in central western Namibia, northwest of the Brandberg. Vast exposures of gently folded Precambrian strata, highly dissected by the west-flowing Ugab River and its tributaries, promise superb geology in a breathtaking desert landscape.

Apart from the deepwater system, Palaeozoic/Mesozoic sedimentary and volcanic sequences will also be viewed. Stunning geology, combined with landscapes of untamed natural beauty where the desert elephant still rules, guarantees an unforgettable experience.

Please note that the Geological and Social Day Trips may be of interest to guests.
