Photo courtesy of Hermanus Tourism. From Cape Town the route lies across the Cape Flats and over the most southerly range of the Cape Fold Belt to the whale-viewing capital of South Africa, Hermanus. The first viewpoint is above the town overlooking Walker Bay and Danger Point, where the wreck of the Royal Navy’s H.M.S. Birkenhead, early in the 19th Century, helped establish the tradition of “women and children first.” We then visit the estuary of the Klein River, near Hermanus and then its sister estuary, that of the nearby Bot River, good examples of rapidly filled small-scale depocenters and of the effect of multiple sea-level fluctuations during the Quaternary.
Geologically young (2005) landslides are then seen in Betty’s Bay, along with Ordovician tillites of the Table Mountain Group’s Pakhuis Formation, which can also be seen on the summit of Table Mountain itself. Late Tertiary talus deposits are exposed in vertical roadcuttings along the beautiful Clarence Drive beside the eastern coastline of False Bay, the entire Cape Peninsula being seen in silhouette to the west in late-afternoon light. On reaching Gordon’s Bay we scramble down towards the shoreline to view an angular unconformity, rivalling that of Hutton at Siccar Point in Scotland, between turbidites of the Late Proterozoic Malmesbury Group and the Ordovician fluvial sandstones at the base of the Table Mountain Group.
Please note that the Geological and Social Day Trips may be of interest to guests.
