This exciting half-day excursion provides the geological story behind Cape Town’s scenic mountain and coastal vistas. Highlights include Signal Hill 300 m above the City Bowl where Robben Island can be seen 10 km offshore, the cliff faces of Table Mountain and the much-modified foreshore of Table Bay upon which the city is built. From Signal Hill we descend down to the rocky shoreline to examine the famous Sea Point Contact where Darwin, on his travels around the world, examined the effects of magma intrusion into basement rocks.
We then head south to Hout Bay, a protected embayment and drive one of the most scenic roads, Chapman’s Peak Drive. From the lookout point at Chapman’s Peak Drive, we have a view of the regional geology as well as an up-close look at the mudstone and cross-bedded sandstone at the base of the Cape Supergroup.
This trip will emphasize how Table Mountain obtained its shape, the deep geological history of the area and how humans have impacted it. This trip is a must if you want to understand how nature provided us with the beauty and uniqueness of the fairest Cape!
