Photo courtesy of Phillip Olivier. This day trip explores two Cape wine regions, Durbanville and Stellenbosch. The Tyger or Leopard Hill’s stop has a panoramic overview of the Coastal wine region, Atlantic Ocean, Robben Island and the Cape Peninsula. Terroir and linkage to geology are presented during visits to several wine estates and cellars. Sampled will include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merolt, Sauvignon blanc and the uniquely Cape Pinotage wines from vines rooted in terroirs of the Simosberg and Helderberg wards on the foothills of mountains sheltering the Stellenbosch wine valley.
This Sauvignon blanc vineyard on the estate Thelema is located on a saddle of high ground that links Simonsberg (photo) to the Jonkershoekberge on the western margin of the Cape Fold Mountain Belt. The precipitous, weathering-resistant sandstones that form the upper part of Simonsberg rest on an older landscape composed of Malmesbury sediments and Cape granite. The gravelly vineyard soil consists of a mixture of gravity-transported sandstone fragments and weathered granite and owes its red colour to intense weathering under humid conditions during the early Miocene or possibly earlier, toward the culmination of the African cycle.
