House of Delegates Meeting

1. Call to Order and Introductions
The 43nd Annual Meeting of the House of Delegates was called to order on May 19, 2013 at 8:03 a.m. by R. Randy Ray, Chair of the House of Delegates.
Chair Ray recognized the AAPG Past Presidents, Past Chairs of the House and Honorary Members of the House that were in attendance.
Chair Ray invited the non-delegates who were past chairs of the House to move to the front row.
Chair Ray introduced the officers of the House of Delegates: Larry Wickstrom, Chair-Elect and Karen Glaser, Secretary/Editor. Ray also recognized the House parliamentarian, Mary Bahde.
Chair Ray recognized the House chairs and their committees: Constitution and Bylaws Committee Chair, Steven M. Goolsby; Resolutions Committee Chair, Edward M. Rothman; Rules and Procedures Committee Chair, Mark A. Rainer; Newsletter Committee/Minutes Approval Committee Chair, Karen S. Glaser; Honors and Awards Committee Chair, Laura C. Zahm; Nominations and Election Committee Chair, David H. Hawk; and the Credentials Committee Chair, Andrea Reynolds.
Chair Ray recognized members of the AAPG Executive Committee in attendance: Edward A. “Ted” Beaumont, President; Lee Krystinik, President-Elect; Thomas E. Ewing, Sections Vice President; Stuart D. Harker, Regions Vice President; Denise M. Cox, Secretary; Deborah K. Sacrey, Treasurer; and Stephen E. Laubach, Editor.
Chair Ray also recognized the AAPG staff.
2. Annual Meeting Report
Michael Canich, Convention General Chair, provided a summary of the 2013 ACE. Canich stated this is a historic meeting for an annual convention being the first time east of the Mississippi river since Atlanta in 1986. He recognized the convention leadership that volunteered to make the meeting a success. Canich reported attendance is expected to reach approximately 4,700 – 5,000 attendees. There were 64 corporate sponsors with a total raised of $566,000 to AAPG’s bottom line and a total of $768,750 in sponsorships. He reported 386 oral and 542 posters were accepted; 14 short courses, 5 high quality forums and special sessions and 4 guest enrichment programs. He asked everyone to thank the sponsors and exhibitors because without them the meeting would not be possible. Exhibit “A”
3. AAPG President’s Report
President Ted Beaumont stated that during his presidency that he has emphasized science. He referenced the new journal with SEG called Interpretation. Randy Ray is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief. The journal will be a mix of geology and geophysics technical papers.
He reported that a group of geologists met informally at the AAPG conventions to discuss structure and geomechanics who would like to eventually be called the Petroleum Structure and Geomechanics Division with formal recognition from the Association. There would be a chair and vice chair with no Executive Committee. Beaumont stated the leadership of AAPG agrees this would be beneficial to the Association if a new division is passed by the House of Delegates.
He announced the new officers who will serve on the AAPG Executive Committee. They are: Randi Martinsen, President-Elect; John Kaldi, VP Regions; and Richard Ball, Secretary.
Beaumont stated this past year was the best year of his professional life and said it was an honor and privilege to serve AAPG as President.
4. Executive Director’s Report
David Curtiss, AAPG Executive Director, reported Headquarters is focused on taking a look at the mission of AAPG, which is a scientific and professional association. There are seven components in Article II; four are focused on science and three are focused on professionalism and professional practice. AAPG also focused on the AAPG Strategic Plan which was developed over ten years ago. The main goal of the strategic plan is to become indispensible to the energy geoscientists. He also stated the association must provide value and relevance to the global geoscience community and build an association that attracts members.
5. Other Reports
Delegates received reports from the AAPG Treasurer, AAPG Editor, Chairman of the Foundation and the EMD, DEG and DPA Presidents. Exhibit “B”
6. Report of the Chair of the House of Delegates
R. Randy Ray reported the House has focused on strategic issues that affect AAPG’s future while also addressing some of the housekeeping needs. He stated the House will consider very important legislation brought forward by the Resolutions Committee and a proposed bylaw amendment brought forward by the Constitution and Bylaws Committee. He reviewed the proposed bylaws and resolution amendments.
7. Credentials Committee
Andrea Reynolds, Chair of the Credentials Committee, reported there are 220 elected delegates, 168 delegates had been seated by 9:20 a.m. and 111 is required for a quorum. The report was adopted by general consent. (Note: the final count was 177.)

Motion: The motion to seat delegates was adopted as follows: Barry Katz, Houston Geological Society; Timothy Grant, Houston Geological Society; Denise Cox, Southeastern Geological Society; Robbie Gries, RMAG; Valerie Schulz, Dallas Geological Society; Robert Hulse, RMAG and Jeremy Boak, RMAG. Motion Carried.
Chair Reynolds’ amended the report stating there were now 175 seated delegates representing 80% of the elected delegates was adopted by general consent.
8. Approval of Agenda
Motion: Chair R. Randy Ray moved to approve the amended agenda. Motion Carried. Exhibit “C”
9. Approval of the Minutes
The minutes for the House of Delegates meeting held on April 22, 2012 in Long Beach, CA were accepted. Exhibit “D”
10. Honors and Awards Committee
Laura Zahm, Chair of the Honors and Awards Committee recognized the members and announced the following House award recipients for the year 2013:

11. Nomination and Election Committee
David H. Hawk, Chair of the Nomination and Election Committee recognized the members of the committee. The following slate of candidates were introduced to the House and each candidate was allowed three minutes for a brief statement.

An amended credentials report showed 177 delegates now in attendance.
A ballot vote was taken.
12. Report of Rules and Procedures Committee
Mark A. Rainer, Chair of the Rules and Procedures Committee, recognized the members of his committee and reported there are no changes to the Rules and Procedures.
13. Constitution and Bylaws Committee
Steven M. Goolsby, Chair of the Constitution and Bylaws Committee, recognized the members of his committee. He stated the 2013 Proposed Amendment to the Bylaws was provided to the delegates as a handout. Exhibit “G”
The proposed amendment to Article XIII, Dues, Section 3, of the AAPG Bylaws by deleting current section f. and adding Written notification by mail, electronic mail, or other suitable means shall be provided to each Member, (including each Member designated as an Emeritus Member or an Honorary Member), Student, and Associate before July 1 of each year, stating the amount of annual dues owed. was adopted.
14. Resolutions Committee
Edward M. Rothman, Chair of the Resolutions Committee recognized and thanked the members of the committee. He stated the committee has contacted two societies, the Geological Society of Iowa and the Nebraska Geological Society, who have not sent members to the House for a number of years. The committee was informed that the Geological Society of Iowa is no longer in existence and the Nebraska Geological Society would send a delegate to this meeting.
Motion: The motion was adopted to accept two new affiliated societies as follows:
Ghana Institution of Geoscientists (GhiG)
Myanmar Geosciences Society (MGS)
15. Newsletter Committee
Karen Glaser, Newsletter Committee Chair, recognized the members of the committee and the staff and provided deadlines for the last 2012-2013 issue of the Delegates’ Voice.
16. Officer Recognition
Chair Ray presented incoming chair of the HoD, Larry Wickstrom, the official House necktie and gavel
17. Results of House Officer Elections
Chair Ray announced the results of the election for the 2013-14 House officers declaring David Dolph, elected Chair-Elect and Dan Billman elected Secretary/Editor.
There being no further business, Chair Ray adjourned the meeting at 11:15 a.m.
