Welcome Back to the Eastern U.S.!
Hello fellow AAPG delegates!
This is an exciting time to be in the AAPG leadership as we have a number of vital issues being considered, issues that will chart the future course of our great association. I have learned a great deal this past year working with HoD Chair Randy Ray and Secretary/Editor Karen Glaser, as well as past chairs Jeff Lund and David Hawk. As always, AAPG members are outstanding geoscientists, but also just darn good people to be around.
With this article, I want to urge you to come to the HoD meeting in Pittsburgh WELL PREPARED. The best way to do that is to read this and the previous Delegates’ Voice cover to cover. As you should know, we will have two resolutions and one Bylaws amendment to work on at the meeting, in addition to our normal business items, awards, and election. The better prepared we are prior to the meeting, the better we can expedite all the business that needs addressing.
Perhaps the largest item before us this year is to consider a resolution to form a new technical division within the association. This has been discussed and dissected at a number of meetings and teleconferences this past year. After weighing all the discussion I feel that we should welcome the opportunity to include a new division that embraces an important and exciting sector of our science and industry. AAPG is, first and foremost, all about the science and this new division certainly fits that bill. Our job, as I see it, is not to dwell on the details of how this division will be governed or budgeted, but to decide if this sector of our science is worthy of a new division within AAPG.
Also, as I prepare to take over as chair of the House of Delegates, I ask you for your assistance in a couple of ways. First, please contact me at any time to let me know what issues you feel are important for the House to address, and your thoughts and suggestions about the issues before us. The more input I have, the better I can guide this great institution. Secondly, one of the first and biggest tasks before a new chair is to fill all the committee seats. Please review the committees and their duties and let me know on which committee you would like to serve. I especially would like to see new HoD members and those who have not served on committees in the past become active now. Slip me your card with a committee written on it while in Pittsburgh, or send me an email.
