Officers

Long Beach Approaches
The AAPG HoD Annual Meeting will be held on April 22 in Long Beach and we will receive updates from AAPG leadership, conduct 2011-12 business and elect new officers. I want to thank all of you for willingness to serve as Delegates, particularly those of you who have been serving as House Committee members and especially those serving as Chairs and Vice-Chairs.
Please prepare for the meeting by reading all the material you receive from AAPG Headquarters in the next few weeks. Talk with the AAPG members you represent and bring questions and comments to Long Beach! Remember to set your alarm clocks the evening of the April 21 so we can start on time! Finally, please go back to your November issue of the AAPG Explorer and reread President Paul Weimer’s column. (http://www.aapg.org/explorer/2011/11nov/president1111.cfm) Come to Long Beach ready to discuss some of the challenges Paul describes as we move our global association into the 21st century from its origin as the Southwest Association of Petroleum Geologists!
You recall (I hope) the areas of my focus this year are:
- “Energizing” the Delegates to become proactively involved as communicators to their Affiliated Societies, Sections and International Regions and help step up recruitment of new AAPG Members, and
- Continue efforts to make the AAPG membership application process “more welcoming” for the applicants and efficient for both the applicants and the Association.
There is much we’ve done this year and much still in progress. In my comments to the House in Long Beach I will update you on my views of what we’ve accomplished and what remains.
To start some discussion, let me say I believe AAPG members are influenced by two primary factors that motivate joining and participating in the association:
- Access to cutting edge scientific information, training and ideas
- Fellowship and networking with colleagues.
My personal experience along these lines in 2011-12 was highlighted by the opportunity to attend ICE in Milan and, among many other unique experiences, hear a lecture by Dr. Emiliano Mutti on turbidites. That was one of the most entertaining and interesting lectures ever!
Another unforgettable experience has been the chance to meet and bond with so many fellow geoscientists, Executive Committee members and the House Leadership team at the numerous Section meetings, breakfasts and other AAPG events.
Good things are happening at AAPG!

If you were able to attend NAPE in Houston last month, you may have noticed the quantum leap in the footprint of the AAPG International Pavilion, which now holds its own events and program two days prior to NAPE and occupies a significant part of the exhibit floor. This was done in a new spirit of cooperation with the AAPL and enhances AAPG’s presence at NAPE.
Another major development was the announcement in February of the joint AAPG, SPE and SEG initiative, URTeC, scheduled for August 2013:
Unconventional Resources Technology Conference — a new event from SPE, AAPG and SEG
In my view, developing and creating new events like these are not only positive as new business ventures, but epitomize bold new initiatives and cooperation with sister professional organizations on a global scale. These developments serve as recruiting tools and hit squarely on why we join AAPG and find membership “indispensible.”
Other initiatives are underway
On a less enthusiastic note, as of February, Active Member count in AAPG is down slightly in absolute numbers for the second consecutive year. Despite low natural gas prices, the revolution of unconventional technology, increasing enrollment in university geoscience departments and high oil prices, might lead one to expect growth, not decline.
We need to get our message out. We need to recruit and embrace all qualified individuals as new members and make joining AAPG a welcoming process. We need to take to heart our strategic plan’s “Big Audacious Goal” of becoming indispensible to all professionals in the energy-related geosciences worldwide.
AAPG must continue its “change process” to be more “inclusive,” instead of focusing on “exclusion,” if we are to achieve our strategic goals.
Thanks to all Delegates for their hard work in 2011-12, especially those who have volunteered to serve on committees. We have made progress, but there is much to do!
