HOD Officer Candidates
Chair-Elect

It is an honor to be nominated by my peers to stand for office, and I express my appreciation to the Nominations Committee for asking me to run for Chair-Elect of the House of Delegates this year. I have had a love affair with the earth sciences since an early age. When I was in the eighth grade, I won a first place plaque from the Fort Worth Geological and Geophysical Society at the Texas State Science Fair for my project on micropaleontology. This love of the earth sciences is something I still carry with me today, and serving within the AAPG and in the HoD is one way I express that sentiment.
I know that AAPG is an important part of my career, and feel that membership in AAPG should be important to the career of every earth scientist worldwide. One of the major problems that the leadership of AAPG is wrestling with today is that many folks don’t seem to agree with this viewpoint. Most Student Members and many Associate Members who are qualified to do so never bother to become Active Members. How to encourage these people to move to Active Membership is currently a vigorous discussion within AAPG. There are several conflicting opinions and proposals as to how to proceed on this issue.
A major role of the House of Delegates is to resolve these differences of opinion by debating the merits of each viewpoint and then implementing the best possible proposal that will serve the good of the Association and its members. This task is critical to the growth and vitality of the AAPG. If elected, I will work to insure that issues such as this, and the conflicting opinions surrounding them, are brought before the HoD in a transparent and timely manner.
AAPG membership continues to diversify as we become a more global society, and the challenges facing the Association continue to be formidable. However, we all love the earth sciences and enjoy the camaraderie of our fellow scientists, so we can all cooperate to meet these challenges. I look forward to the opportunity to work with the past and current HoD leadership, my fellow delegates, and the leadership of the AAPG to implement the changes that need to be addressed by the HoD. By doing so, I will help ensure that the AAPG remains the premier earth science society that it has been in the past, and will aid in making it indispensable to all earth scientists worldwide in the future. For this reason, if elected, I will enthusiastically strive to fulfill the duties of the office.
