Committee Reports
Resolutions
I start my report by thanking all my committee members for their hard work.
- Maurice N. Birdwell, Co-chair (Gulf Coast)
- Paul Britt (Gulf Coast)
- Jeanne Harris (Rocky Mountain)
- David M. Miner (Pacific)
- Craig W. Reynolds (Southwest)
The Resolutions Committee is to report its recommendations concerning all advance petitions, resolutions, or motions to the House of Delegates at the annual meeting. The committee is not required to review resolutions on proposed amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws or Rules and Procedures Committees.
The Resolutions Committee is also responsible for assuring good attendance by Affiliated Societies and the Regions, and directing any required “Disaffiliation” procedures for Societies or Regions that are persistent “no-shows” at the annual meeting.
Petitions to Affiliate
The Committee reviewed two following petitions to affiliate with AAPG. Their petitions have also been reviewed by AAPG legal counsel and recommended by the Executive Committee.
- Balochistan Geoscientists Association. Upon review of its constitution, bylaws, and aims, the Resolutions Committee recommends the House approves the petition of the Balochistan Geoscientists Association to affiliate with the AAPG. This association is located within Balochistan province of Pakistan, which covers over 40% of Pakistan.
- Atlantic Geoscience Society. Upon review of its constitution, bylaws, and aims, the Resolutions Committee recommends the House approves the petition of the Atlantic Geological Society to affiliate with the AAPG. This society is located within the Atlantic provinces of Canada and is already affiliated with the Geological Association of Canada (GAC) and the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG).
Affiliated Societies and Regions
The Resolutions Committee attempted to contact a total of 24 societies and regions which either have not been represented at recent annual meetings of the House of Delegates or have been under-represented. Out of the 24, 12 societies and regions responded, with some good results:
- 6 societies and 2 regions responded by selecting delegates to attend this meeting.
However, seven societies have not been represented for at least 2 previous years:
- Everglades Geological Society
- Geological Society of Iowa
- Miami Geological Society
- New York State Geological Association
- Professional Geologists of Indiana
- San Angelo Geological Society
- Southeastern Geological Society
Section III.A.1.e.1 of the House Rules and Procedures direct the Resolutions Committee to attempt to contact any society that is not represented for two consecutive years to encourage participation and to determine if the Society is inactive. Of these six societies, two responded. The Professional Geologists of Indiana responded that they always intend its delegate to attend. New York State Geological Association was unaware of its responsibilities to send delegates and is intending to do so.
The other four affiliated societies did not respond, although this is the second year the committee has attempted to contact them. Some appear to be active but still do not respond.
If the affiliated society does not respond within 6 months, Section III.A.1.e.2 directs the Chairman of the House to certain actions to encourage appropriate representation of AAPG Active members at the House annual meeting. These actions are to send “three personal letters,” (1) to the Affiliated Society to encourage its participation, (2) to the appropriate Section President to request its involvement, and (3) to the members within the jurisdiction of that Society to advise them that they are not represented and to invite their attention to this matter.”
Therefore, the Committee refers the names of the following five societies to the Chairman of the House for the activities defined by the Rules and Procedures, assuming none have delegates at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the House of Delegates.
- Everglades Geological Society
- Geological Society of Iowa
- Miami Geological Society
- San Angelo Geological Society
- Southeastern Geological Society
I thank Chair Steve Sonnenberg and the House for the opportunity to serve.
