Letter from the Chair
As incoming Chair of the House of Delegates, I want to thank last year’s chair, George Bole, for his outstanding leadership and for doing a great job. This year promises to be just as busy and exciting for the House. The New Orleans convention is just seven months away and we have plenty of work ahead of us.
All of the House Committees have been filled and where appropriate, new chairs and vice chairs named. The following people are House committee chairs for this year:
- Constitution and Bylaws:
- John Hogg
- Resolutions:
- Sandi Barber
- Rules and Procedures:
- Maurice Birdwell
- Newsletter:
- Laura Zahm
- Honors and Awards:
- Mike Party
- Nomination and Election:
- Larry Wickstrom
- Credentials:
- Randy Ray
- Minutes Approval:
- Laura Zahm
All the committees are fully staffed and are working away on their assigned duties. The Constitution and Bylaws Committee has taken a detailed look at the Global Corporate Structure issue. The committee met via four phone conferences and an allday meeting prior to the AAPG Annual Leadership Conference (August 2009) on the Corporate Structure issue. The committee reported at the AAPG Leadership Conference that no significant changes are necessary in the constitution and bylaws for AAPG to achieve the strategic goal of globalization. I think all the delegates present in the audience breathed a sigh of relief that the New Orleans HoD meeting might not be a time record setter. The committee is continuing to work on several other smaller issues.
The Resolutions committee continues to work on Affiliated Society attendance at the House meetings. We have several Affiliated Societies who have been no shows for the past couple of years. Lack of participation can result in disaffiliation of the societies. We have six affiliated societies that have been no shows for the past three years: Everglades Geological Society, Fort Smith Geological Society, Geological Society of Iowa, Miami Geological Society, San Angelo Geological Society, and the Southeastern Geological Society. If you are a member of any of these societies, please plan on attending the New Orleans convention.
The bylaws changes passed at the Denver meeting probably will not impact our existing Rules and Procedures so I am not expecting many changes for Rules and Procedures from the committee.
The Honors and Awards and Nominations and Elections Committees can use your nominations. If you want to nominate someone or wish to be nominated yourself, please contact the appropriate chair.
This Fall, I will be attending three section meetings (Gulf Coast, Eastern, and Mid-Continent), the International Meeting in Rio, and the mid-year House meeting. We will have delegate meetings (normally breakfasts) at each of the section meetings and the international meeting. I look forward to working with you this year and visiting with you at the various meetings.
