Delegate and Region Past President

The year 2009 has been remarkable for the Africa Region. We successfully organized the Imperial Barrel Award Competition for the second year running – some may call that a late start for an event that has been on for so many years. We think it is a modest beginning that has seen us brake barriers – barriers of challenging logistics and challenges of inadequate facilities (to mention a few) that have stood in our ways in joining in a veritable training forum so laudable and so enriching for the participants. The remarkable achievement of the African flag bearers in this competition gives us great expectations that soon, our participants will be ranked in the top three.

The year 2009, was also our first participation in a Geological Field Immersive Program of the Indiana University. This is still on-going in Montana at the time of this report. This excites us so much because the student participants were chosen on the basis of their scholastic standard. It is a major breakthrough for the students who have the opportunity of participating in geological field work with their counterparts in the USA. I would like to congratulate the ambassadors of Africa who, from all reports received so far, have given a good account of themselves and their mentors.

We are not stopping here with any of these events. We plan to do similar things in 2010 and beyond.

The Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) sponsored the field immersive program entirely. This is not trivial considering the cost of transporting six people 11,000 miles for this program and housing them for several weeks. That is the extent of NAPE disposition to this rare opportunity for the African students. I would like to thank Past President Scott Tinker as well as NAPE President Victor Agbe-Davis for putting this together.

The Third West Africa Deepwater Conference (DOWAC) is coming up in Abuja, Nigeria in November 2010. The flyers are out and the Web site will soon open for this follow-up to the thrillers we had in Abuja (2004) and Luanda, Angola (2006) respectively. Everyone is WELCOME!
