Letter from the Chair-Elect

Steve Sonnenberg

by Steve Sonnenberg

Chair Elect

The 2009 House of Delegates meeting will be in Denver on June 7. The Denver meeting is special to me because I am serving as the General Technical Program Chair for the meeting. We have received 1,350 abstracts so we will have a strong technical program. Our convention phrase for the convention is: “Image the Past and Imagine the Future.”

Technical themes for the program include:

We have plans for accepting about 430 oral presentations and 700 poster presentations. We will also have plenty of short courses and field trips for participants to choose from.

A big part of professionalism is getting people involved in professional societies. Professional societies exist to support the profession and professionals. Part of what you can do is to get your geoscience colleagues involved in AAPG and promote coming to Denver for the convention. The convention will provide the professional with educational, networking, and social opportunities. All are fun opportunities. Meeting new people and expanding ones network is an important survival technique that many of us have used over the years. At the convention, we will honor individuals with awards which is another important purpose of professional societies. Several HoD awards will be presented at the opening session as well as the HoD meeting.

I was visiting with some of my Denver colleagues recently and we were discussing how we attend the Annual AAPG convention regardless whether someone or company is paying us to attend. I have often attended conventions on my time (vacation) and on my nickel. I know many of you share this view. I know you all are coming to Denver and I look forward to seeing you at the HoD meeting.

After the Denver convention, I will put my HoD Chairman hat on. 2009-10 promises to be a busy year for AAPG and the House of Delegates. We will have important HoD business to conduct and I will need your help and support. If you want to become more active in HoD affairs, please let me know .
