The annual AAPG Leadership Days is always a refreshing gathering where those who are entrusted with guiding the association assess and discuss association business. In late August, 144 association leaders gathered in Tulsa to work, network, interact with AAPG staff and, yes, eat!

The overarching theme of Leadership Days was scientific globalization, and the agenda included a well-attended tour of AAPG headquarters, six sessions focusing on education, research, and publishing, and a general session on the view of the industry from an investor’s perspective. In addition, Astronaut and AAPG Astrogeology Committee co-Chair Jim Reilly presented a fascinating talk on Exploring New Frontiers.

A special dimension to Leadership Days was the attendance of 13 students/young professionals representing all but one of the Sections and Regions. These new members held special sessions, offered insights, and worked to the best of their abilities to bring some of us seasoned vets into the 21st century!
