Thomas Mairs, in memory

Bob Webster, secretary, editor

CITATION: To Thomas Mairs for outstanding leadership during challenging times and for exemplary service to the House of Delegates.

Patrick J.F. Gratton, 2002

CITATION: To Thomas Mairs, dedicated lifelong geologist, for exemplary contributions to the House of Delegates, to the profession of geology, and to the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

Ed W. Heath, 2003

Tom Mairs, past Chair of the House of Delegates, 1998 – 1999, passed away at the end of October last year. His significant service to the AAPG but most particularly to the House of Delegates has been recognized through his many awards, including those cited above for Distinguished Member of the House and Honorary Member of the House. Although many distinguished members contributed to the significant organic changes to the structure of AAPG over the past decade, it was Tom’s fair and even hand which presided over the Annual Meeting on 11 May of 1999, the longest of memory at 6 hours 33 minutes. Prior to then there was no seat on the Advisory Council for the House of Delegates. Prior to then there were no International Regions with representation in the Advisory Council or within the AAPG. Prior to then there were no term limits for Chairs of Committees. Prior to then our Editor was appointed, not elected; this change was voted upon at the meeting one year later. We have evolved into a much more global and representative organization – not without angst, but we survived undivided, a testament to Tom’s tempered and democratic nature as well as his sense of humor.

To Thomas Mairs, friend to all, generous of time and spirit, dedicated servant to his family, to his profession, and to his God. He touched so many lives, and made us all better people. We miss you.

Valary Schulz, 2008
