Membership Drive

by Terry Hollrah, HoD Chair

Dear Delegates,

AAPG has launched a membership drive, which commenced at APPEX in Houston and runs through the end of April, 2003. I can't think of a more important activity for the House of Delegates at this time than recruiting new members to our great organization. In fact, the AAPG Bylaws under Article IV, Section 5, paragraph (g) states that "Delegates shall actively solicit applications from eligible geologists for membership in the Association." In order to keep our organization strong, we must continue to attract new members. I am asking that every Delegate take the responsibility for recruiting "at least" one new active or associate member to AAPG.

The Association is offering cash prizes and recognition awards as part of the incentive for recruiting new members. AAPG Dollars are being awarded to the top recruiter in each Section and Region. The Grand Prize will be a trip to next year's International meeting in Barcelona, Spain.

By taking an active role in the recruiting process, you are also helping to communicate the many benefits of membership in AAPG. AAPG offers something for every geoscientist. Membership includes professional development, outreach, and personal member programs, while the basics include the monthly Bulletin, Explorer, Bulletin Archives on-line, and Search & Discovery. Of course, the benefits of Professionalism including Outreach and Ethics as well as Networking and Advocacy are extremely important to a member's profession.

There is plenty of time for you as a Delegate to have an impact in the Membership Drive. I urge you to spread the word at local meetings and make direct contact with those you know who are not members of AAPG. I am also asking Delegates to consider hosting a "membership reception", where non-members are invited to meet members, hear about AAPG and sign-up. AAPG will help fund the reception as long as an estimate of the costs is approved by the AAPG Executive Director, Rick Fritz.

I appreciate your efforts in this important event! AAPG's membership benefits are summarized in a Membership Value Pyramid which will soon be available on a CD. Please contact Donna Riggs at AAPG headquarters ( or 888-945-2274x612) if you have questions or would like a copy of the Pyramid CD.

Let's all get involved!

Note from the Web Site Manager: The CD contains a slide presentation with script to assist you in speaking at meetings. If you'd rather not wait for the CD click here to download and/or preview this information now.
