by Terry L. Hollrah,
Chairman
Thanks
to last year's guidance of Ed Dolly and Marty Hewitt, we are off
and running in the 2002-2003 year. Chairman-Elect George Eynon
and Secretary/Editor Lee Avary join me this year to lead the House
of Delegates of AAPG. I was curious to see who my predecessors
were as Chairman of the HoD since its inception and change from
District Representatives on June 30, 1970. George Gibson was the
first chairman of the House of Delegates in 1970. (Actually, counting
next year, George Eynon will be known as Chairman George IV).
There have been two AAPG Presidents, seven DPA Presidents, and
one DEG President that have chaired the House in the last 33 years.
It is truly an honor to be part of this group. See
Table.
All of the HoD committees are in place except for the Future of
Earth Scientists Committee. This committee and its purpose are
being reviewed by the Rules and Procedures Committee to see if
it should continue in its present form as a standing committee.
Anyone who wants to step forward and chair this committee should
let me know. Each committee chair will give a written report elsewhere
in this issue and future issues of The Delegates' Voice.
Each report should have the current items that will be addressed
at the Salt Lake City meeting in May 2003. The Honors and Awards
Committee and the Nomination and Election Committee are under
the most pressure as they need to complete their agenda by September
30th of this year.
An HoD ad hoc committee has been formed called the Advisory Council
Proportional Representation Committee. This committee, chaired
by Rich Green in Dallas, will study the proposal by the GCAGS
Board requesting approval to reorganize the AAPG Advisory Council
based upon proportional membership of each United States Section
and International Region. This committee will evaluate the pros
and cons of this issue and bring forth a recommendation to the
HoD officers at the Midyear Meeting in January 2003.
The HoD Forum on the AAPG website is being studied to see if it
should be continued. The apathy and lack of support was evidenced
by the seven returns we received from the recent survey. It appears
the Delegates are satisfied to receive HoD information through
the Delegates' Voice or the AAPG Explorer.
I'm excited about this year for AAPG. I will be very accessible:
