Candidates for Chairman-Elect

George Eynon

It is an honor and a privilege to be selected as a candidate for Chairman-Elect of the House of Delegates -- a body critical to the harmonious running of our Association's affairs. Ours is a science-based, professional association, and the House needs to run smoothly and democratically so we can devote our precious volunteer time to addressing scientific and professional issues. Much of the House activity in recent years has been too political for my liking and I would like to help change that. We must manage the business agenda of the House and its committees by being thorough in consideration of the issues, but concise in debate; and while debate should be open and free, the will of the majority must rule once the Delegates have made a decision.

I would be delighted to serve as Chair of the House, but pledge my support to work with Mike Party in whatever capacity he might wish if he is elected.

J. Michael Party

It is indeed a privilege and an honor to be chosen as a candidate for Chairman-Elect of the House of Delegates. We work in one of the most exciting professions in the world and the AAPG is the premier organization of our profession. I joined the AAPG my senior year in college as a junior member and became an active member in 1981. My professors at the University of Missouri-Rolla knew the value of an AAPG membership to their students as they embarked on their careers in geology. It is our responsibility as a member of this great organization to ensure that it remains so. The AAPG would not exist without the continued commitment of it members. This commitment comes in many shapes and sizes, from the people working behind the scenes to the elected officials center stage. My involvement with my profession started in college when I volunteered as field trip chairman for our geological society and has continued to this day by serving in many capacities for the local societies as well as the AAPG. It is with this commitment in mind that I accepted the candidacy for Chairman-Elect of the House of Delegates.

The Chairman-elect will have a seat on the Executive Committee and have input into the policies and direction of the AAPG. It is the responsibility of the AAPG leadership to always look for ways to help its membership. The AAPG has a large and diverse membership. As leaders of this organization we have to be cognizant of this fact. These diversities come in several forms, from small independents to those working in large companies, to persons exploring and working in the U.S., and to members that are exploring and living worldwide.
