Credentials Committee

Stew Chuber & Marilyn Cisar, Co-Chairs

A WELL KEPT SECRET

Unknown and unpublicized to House Delegates is the well kept secret that the best permanent HOD committee chair is that of the Credentials Committee. Not only are the duties of this job restricted in time to a short period before and at the annual HOD meeting, but the job also entails greeting all of your buddies from wherever (and whenever) you have worked who are a part of the session. Your early arrival at the annual meeting allows you to set up some minimum guidelines with your committee (candidatesýfor House office), and grab some pastries with a hot cup of coffee. In addition you have the pleasure to coordinate with Donna Riggs, who is the AAPG liaison to the Credentials Committee. Her long-term experience with the Delegates' list and history makes easy the occasional need for a judgment involving seating.

ýerhaps the most difficult part of the C.C. Chairman's duties is to find an acceptable joke to tell the Delegates, provided the House honcho, i.e. Chairman, approves. It cannot be a shaggy dog story, obviously not be ethnic, and most likely should involve a self effacing story about you, your school or a personal experience. Of course, if you don't want to "start anything" you don't have to tell a joke, but you have all year to find one. The constant flow of humorous material from a Chairman like Lowell Lischer gives you plenty of opportunity.

This year Ed Dolly has asked me (Stew Chuber) to co-chair the Credentials Committee with Marilyn Taggi Cisar, a senior staff geological engineer with Shell E & P Technology, and she wants to add the following note to our committee report: "Although we don't have any committee members yet, and we won't until the officer candidates are decided for the 2002-2003 term, we do have work to do prior to the annual meeting in Houston next Spring! We will be working with the Constitution and Bylaws Committee, House leadership and members of AAPG staff to address the question of what constitutes a "quorum" during the annual meetings. We look forward to working with the other committees and welcome input from other members of the House of Delegates."

So, rest assured that we will not be asleep at the switch for the midyear or annual meetings, and we will indeed look forward to greeting all in the Bayou City.
