Officer Candidates: Chairman-Elect

Donald Dean Clarke

I am honored to stand as a candidate for the Chairman of the AAPG House of Delegates. I have worked on AAPG-related projects for years and feel that my AAPG membership has been an integral part of my career. We are a society of geoscientists with a common goal to exploit the world’s energy reserves while protecting the fragile planet. Under the AAPG banner I plan to work with geologists from each section to build a stronger organization and build close alliances with other professional societies.

Sterling Prior, my eighth-grade science teacher and a geologist, inspired me to take up geology. What has kept me working as a geologist is the challenge. As geologists, we continually evolve ideas and develop new tools to find petroleum.

For recreation I love to play volleyball in men’s leagues and tournaments. I love to travel, backpack, mountain-bike, and collect fossils. I spend a fair amount of time with community outreach and helping the local educational system. Our youth are our future. We need to do what we can to interest them in the earth sciences. I often speak to community and retirement groups on how geology impacts their community because I strongly feel that our profession needs a better public profile.

Over the last decade the petroleum industry has gone through tremendous changes. And the changes will continue. Our job is to keep AAPG nimble enough to make the necessary changes to continue to provide for our needs. I will push for changes that strengthen AAPG’s ability to serve us professionally.

My first exposure to the petroleum industry was in the fall of 1962 when I carried a five-gallon can of water about a quarter of a mile to a thirsty roughneck crew. I still remember, as a curious nine-year old, the gas venting from that well. I even received a quarter for my effort. Obviously, I was going to be in petroleum geology for the monetary rewards! Many years later, I was once again exposed to geology by several excellent teachers. Their guidance and tutelage had the single greatest effect on my career choice.

My outside recreational interests are primarily golf and coaching youth league baseball. It is exciting to watch and experience the emotions of eleven-year old kids as they compete against their peers.

As a mentor, I continue to expose students to the joy and thrill of geology and especially petroleum geology. Whether it’s showing fossils and rocks to a grade school class or leading a tour of a drilling rig to college students, I truly enjoy relating my experiences to those who are the future leaders of our organization and industry.

The opportunity to be the Chairman-Elect and ultimately the Chairman of the House of Delegates, to me is second only to the AAPG President in regards of importance and responsibility to the AAPG membership. What a privilege and reward it would be to lead this select body of men and women who are the eyes, ears and voice of the members of AAPG. Having served as an AAPG Delegate continuously since 1988, this nomination is the “coup de grace” of my involvement with the House of Delegates.

Officer Candidates: Secretary-Editor return to top

Martin D. (“Marty”) Hewitt

It is an honor for me to be considered as an officer candidate for the HOD on which I have served for four terms. To be able to make a small contribution to the progress of the AAPG would be a privilege. The AAPG has provided me with opportunities for career and personal development, education, and networking during my career. Shortly after becoming a member of AAPG in 1982 I attended my first Annual Meeting in Calgary. Since then the AAPG and our Annual Meeting have been and continue to be a source of motivation and pride to me as a professional geoscientist.

My interest in geology began in my Senior year in high school when I was introduced to geology in a Physical Geography course. My cousin was also studying geology at University at the time and this introduction led me to enroll in Introductory Geology in my Freshman year at McMaster University. A summer of working in the industry after my Junior year was all I needed to know that I wanted to pursue a career in petroleum geology.

Passions away from the office include travel and the endless pursuit of par (well, maybe bogey!) golf.

Thank you for this opportunity to serve the House and AAPG!

My first “real job” in geology was with Chevron (SOTEX). Soon after reporting to work in the Oklahoma City Division office in 1969, I was approached by my District Geologist about joining AAPG. At that time I guess I was in somewhat of a rebellious state of mind (it was the 60’s after all) and I didn’t really see any benefit to joining per se. I joined SEPM instead, which was then formally affiliated with AAPG, figuring that I could always buy any AAPG publications at the reciprocal member price. I have always regretted not having joined AAPG at that time. Ironically, it was not until 1983 when I no longer worked in the petroleum industry that I did join. This was after I had gone back to graduate school a second time, followed by working for Amoco Research in Tulsa, and then to the Indiana Geological Survey where I have been ever since. I have been active in AAPG ever since I did join.

Without its volunteers, AAPG as an organization could not exist. Volunteers staff committees, help edit publications, and hold elected office at regional, division, and national level. I am always grateful for how much we as members receive from AAPG for our relatively modest dues compared to other professional organizations. I volunteer for AAPG as my way of returning something to the association in exchange for all that I have received. Agreeing to be a candidate for Secretary/Editor of the House is one more way that I can contribute as a volunteer; it is also an honor.
