M. BarberAs an oil patch kid, I grew up in the family tradition of participating in professional societies, which I find both personally and professionally rewarding. During my career, I have benefited tremendously from my colleagues. Being an AAPG Delegate is one way to repay that debt by offering my time and efforts to assist my fellow members. It is a way to participate fully in my profession. It is also an interesting way to fill a Sunday morning (and sometimes an afternoon!) at the Annual Meeting.
I believe that the most essential part of our jobs as delegates is to communicate both to the members and among us. We have traditionally communicated with the Minutes of the House meetings. And with the Delegates' Voice, prior House Secretaries have increased our ability to internally communicate yearlong. In addition to snail-mail communication, we might initiate a Delegates' Chatroom on the AAPG website, facilitating discussions thorough the year and especially in preparation to the House meeting. This chatroom might eventually be open to viewing by the membership, providing insight into AAPG activities and direction. Increased communication with our counterpart groups in the other organizations, such as SEG, SPE, SIPES, and possibly AAPL, might be feasible and beneficial.
My mathematics education provided a foundation for my love of problem solving and organizing. After college, I quickly decided that geoscience offered a vastly expanded field of scientific and business problems over those of programming. And I have not been disappointed. I thoroughly enjoy the puzzles the petroleum industry continues to present in science, in business, in personal growth, and in economics.

A. OsborneFor the first 12 years of my career, I was not a member of AAPG. To tell the truth, I really didn't see the need for it. In 1992, I gave a talk at the Southwest Section meeting and my feelings about AAPG changed. As I walked through the exhibits and listened to the talks, I realized that not only did I know many of these people but also that we had something in common. We were all petroleum geologists. I felt connected to my profession for the first time. I immediately joined AAPG. My only regret is that I did not do it sooner.
I feel that it's a privilege to be a candidate for Secretary/Editor of the House of Delegates. This is a concrete way of being able to give something back to the profession that I love.
At Baylor University, you either went into academia or the petroleum industry. I knew that I wasn't cut out for academia. My uncle was a geophysicist for Exxon so I knew something about the oil business. All this added together directed me to petroleum geology and I have never regretted it.
In addition to petroleum geology, I am interested in the use of neural networks to determine reservoir properties.

Since my last column, I have inherited an ad hoc committee assignment from John to review possible liaison assignments for the office of Chairman-Elect. The committee is composed of the four immediate past Chairmen and the two candidates of Chairman-Elect of the HOD. We are well on our way to a division of labor to relieve some of the load that falls on the Chairman's shoulders. Since the Chairman is a member of the AAPG Executive Committee as well as HOD leader, we are striving to make the Chairman job a little easier, and at a most fortuitous time for me, I might add!
I recently participated in the first-ever Mid-year House of Delegates Meeting. The time was well spent organizing, discussing, and evaluating issues, concerns and even organization of the HOD. The participation of officer candidates in the deliberations was beneficial to continuing efforts of the HOD. Having Ray, Marlan, Terry, and their spouses join us for dinner provided an opportunity to coordinate with the Executive Committee.
The flow of questionnaires sent out in the November issue of The Delegates' Voice has begun to ebb recently. This would refer to the "Requested Poll Questions" insert regarding the number of past-Presidents and past-HOD Chairmen serving on the Advisory Council. I will be making a report on the results of this survey at our meeting in New Orleans. That report will only be as valid as the number of questionnaires upon which it is based, so I really need your help. If you haven't sent in your questionnaire yet, please take some time to do so and send it to me. Thanks.

John and Deborah have added their e-mail addresses at the end of
their columns, I will offer the same advanced communications technology.
