Why I Accepted the Invitation to be a Candidate for an AAPG Office ...

I am honored to be nominated to stand for the office of Vice President-Regions. I agreed to stand because of the opportunity to “give back” to our profession in a role for which my background and skills seem fairly well suited.

My career to now has been an extremely rich tapestry woven around life in the petroleum industry around the world. I was born in Hungary, and am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to live and work in five other countries including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Indonesia and Australia.

Having both international and U.S. experience, I believe I have a balanced view of some of the issues faced by both domestic and international members. In addition, I have an understanding of some of the different roles and drivers of our membership, having worked for major oil and gas companies, a government geological survey, a non-profit research body and academia.

The common thread in my career has been my involvement in professional societies. Having experienced the ups and downs of our industry in the past few decades most geoscientists understand that we may have multiple employers during our careers, but our professional “allegiance” is likely to be to our professional society, and no geoscience society has a higher profile around the world than AAPG!

Because our industry is increasingly becoming more global, AAPG will need to increase our visibility overseas, while at the same time maintaining the trust and confidence of our colleagues domestically. We must raise our awareness of international issues and of the social and political underpinnings driving professional activities around the world. For instance, National Oil Companies are now major international players and small independents are dominating activities in many countries outside North America. Our industry is greying and there just aren’t enough students from traditional Western universities to replace those who have or will be leaving the industry; the most likely source of professional staff in the future will be outside North America.

It is of utmost importance that these young geoscientists are provided with the quality of learning to prepare them to meet a global industry’s needs. We need to start at grass-roots to ensure that international students become aware of our industry and the opportunities for careers therein. This is a formidable challenge and meeting it lies squarely with AAPG and its affiliates and Student chapters, especially in the international regions.

I hope to help our international Regions realize their potential to grow significantly in membership in the next decade. The first step will be improving communications with the regions to emulate the excellent work done by the domestic sections. AAPG Regions and Sections must function as a seamless entity.

If elected I will do as I counsel students and my own kids: work hard, try to do some good and have fun! It is a great honor to be asked to stand, and I believe I have the energy, experience, wisdom and sense of humor to serve you as Vice President-Regions.
