The Michel T. Halbouty Memorial Human Needs Award honored an individual for the outstanding application of geology to the benefit of human needs, and recognized scientific excellence. It was AAPG’s third highest honor. The award’s name was changed to the Michel T. Halbouty Outstanding Leadership Award and amended by Executive Committee action in 2006 and became the second highest award presented by the AAPG.
Description of Award
The award consisted of two sterling silver medals mounted on a plaque with a plate containing the citation of the contribution(s) for which the award was made. One medal displayed the AAPG emblem. The second medal depicted a male figure embracing other humans, all facing a bright and hopeful future across a midground of natural beauty and of buildings symbolic of civilization and social progress. At the base of the standing figures was a banner containing the words “Scientific Excellence.” “Geological Contribution to Human Needs” appeared across the top of the medal and “CONCERN LEADERSHIP PROGRESS” across the bottom.
History
This medal award was made a part of AAPG’s honors by Executive Committee action in 1972. Initially it was a 5-inch solid brass medal mounted on a marble base. It was changed to a plaque-mounted medal award in 1984. Funding for the award was provided by a Foundation fund established by Michel T. Halbouty. In 1988 the name of the award was changed from the Human Needs Award to the Michel T. Halbouty Human Needs Award. In 2005 the name of the award was changed from the Michel T. Halbouty Human Needs Award to the Michel T. Halbouty Memorial Human Needs Award.
