Annual Report 2011: FY July 1, 2010-June 30, 2011

Membership Young Professionals

The mission of the AAPG Young Professionals Committee (YPC) is to foster a challenging and successful career in the energy business for recent college graduates and early career geoscientists (<10 years experience), and to build an understanding of the value of a lasting relationship between AAPG and young professional members. Accomplishing this mission will require (1) open communication with students about careers in earth science; (2) identifying and serving early career needs of young geoscientists; and (3) offering opportunities for networking, career guidance, learning, and enhancing professional competence. The responsibilities of this committee are to provide a series of unique services to AAPG young professional members, to retain and increase our current young professional membership, and to encourage AAPG young professionals to progress from Student to Associate to Active membership.

Our vision is to evolve from a membership committee into a leadership and career development committee, which facilitates a dynamic relationship between students and young professionals, and which represents AAPG’s diverse membership base. “Young Professional” is a transitional status, and requires continued professional development committed to lifelong learning. Additionally, young professionals will challenge the status quo by influencing leadership to continue to move forward through a vehicle of two-way mentorship and guidance and by being a group that not only acts as an agent of change but also embraces and promotes change. Finally, we envision that young professionals will develop into a pool of unique and competent talent from which the AAPG can identify leaders for committee chairs, HoD, Divisions, Advisory Council, Affiliated and Associated Society leadership, and Executive Committee Leadership.

The YP committee achieved the following goals during this fiscal year:

  • Sent a letter of congratulations to new graduates and encouraged their active participation in AAPG
  • Finalized the YP Handbook to be used as a guideline in the Section and Region sub-committees
  • Developed a stronger link with the Student Chapters Committee (to be incorporated into the global committee structure via student chapter liaisons)
  • Appointed a young professional sub-committee chair for each Section and Region
  • Held the first annual Young Professionals Leadership Summit in Tulsa, OK. This summit provides the Section/Region YP leadership with the resources they need to develop a viable young professional network within their respective Section or Region. The summit will be held again in 2011 and invitees include up-and-coming leaders within each of the Section and Region YP sub-committees.
  • Hosted the student/professional Meet-N-Greet at 2011 ACE

Section and Region YP sub-committees have been active developing a strong network and providing opportunities for students and young professionals. Some of the sub-committee highlights around the world include

  • Startup of local, grassroots YP chapters
  • Outreach to student chapters, including increased IBA participation
  • Planning/hosting of convention events including meet-n-greets, student programs, short courses, and student expos
