Annual Report 2011: FY July 1, 2010-June 30, 2011

Canada Region

Region meetings take place once monthly (except July/August) in Calgary, Alberta.

  1. Membership
    • Total membership as of June 7, 2011 for the Region stands at 1,611 vs. 1,644 a year earlier.
  2. Imperial Barrel Award Program
    • Fourth annual Canada Region IBA competition held March 25, 2011 in Calgary.
    • Invited 33 Canadian universities to participate with a budget to accept six schools.
    • Three universities competed (Calgary, Alberta, and Dalhousie).
    • Calgary won the Canada Regionals and went on to compete in Houston in the Globals.
    • Canada has placed 4th, 3rd and 2nd, respectively, in the previous three years of global competition.
    • Very positive IBA feedback. Excellent “seed event” to initiate student chapter growth, awareness of AAPG regional presence and services, build Canada-wide volunteer base, attract new members, and encourage interest in petroleum geology.
    • Thank you to our Region sponsors for this event: Apache, ConocoPhillips, CSEG Foundation, CSPG, Devon, Encana, ESSO, Husky Energy, Nexen, Shell Canada, Talisman Energy, Total, AAPG, AAPG Canada Region.
    • In 2012 will target six universities again.

  3. Currently six Student Chapters (University of Alberta, University of Calgary, University of Manitoba, University of Regina, Dalhousie and University of Western Ontario).
  4. Affiliated Societies
    • The Atlantic Geoscience Society, Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG) and Saskatchewan Geological Society are affiliated Societies within Canada
  5. 2011 Honors and Awards
    • Canada Region Honors and Awards:
    • Honorary Member of the House: John R. Hogg
    • 15 Years Service Awards: David Scott, William Haskett
  6. Canada Region AGM
    • Held in Houston during ACE conference on April 12, 2011.
    • 40–50 in attendance
  7. International Conference & Exhibition (ICE) 2010
    • The Canadian Region hosted the 2010 ICE, September 12–15, 2010 in Calgary
    • 2,281 attendees (second largest ICE after Perth with 2,626).
  8. First Geoscience Technology Workshop (GTW) held in Banff June 12-14, 2011
    • “Resource Plays in Tight Unconventional Reservoirs: Multi-Disciplinary Technological Challenges and Solutions”
    • 74 attendees
    • Canada Foundation 2011–12
  9. AAPG Foundation Trustees have agreed to move forward to establish a Foundation in Canada
  10. Possible opening of a Calgary AAPG office in 2012
    • Regional Office in 2012 a possibility (shared office space with the CSPG/CSEG?).
  11. Committee members for AAPG Committees
    • Based on a call for volunteers for representation on various committees the Canada Region had the following individuals volunteering on these committees:

    • The Region held an election June 12, 2011. New Officers and Delegates for 2011–12 will be:
