AAPG Membership Statistics
The membership of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists represents over 32,000 geoscientists worldwide, geographically located in the oil-producing regions of the earth. AAPG is the world’s largest geological society.
Membership Classifications
- Active Members
- Have a bachelor's degree in the geological sciences and a minimum of three years experience in the professional practice or teaching of geology. A master's degree subtracts one year from the experience requirement, and a doctorate subtracts two.
- Associate Members
- Are graduates of a college of acceptable standards whose employment is associated with geology, may apply for election as an Associate.
- Student Members
- Are students majoring in geology or in a field of study related to or generally associated with geology at a college of acceptable academic standards.
Branches of the Association
AAPG provides an umbrella for several divisions dedicated to more specialized goals. These are:
- Division of Professional Affairs
- Involved with the certification of petroleum geologists, and with the improvement of a member’s professional well-being. Members of the Association who desire professional recognition may apply for certification as a qualified petroleum geologist. Generally, members must have at least eight years actual experience, and must meet and pass certain other review criteria. Visit DPA's Web site.
- DPA membership is 2,952.
- Energy Minerals Division
- Founded to provide a 'home' for those geologists involved in the exploration and exploitation of energy resources other than petroleum and natural gas. A forum is provided for research and discussion of topics such as coal, uranium, tar sands, oil shale, geothermal, etc. Visit EMD's Web site.
- EMD membership is 1,471.
- Division of Environmental Geosciences
- Formed in 1992 to address environmental issues from a geological point of view and meet the needs of geologists involved in environmental geology, waste management and hydrology. Visit DEG's Web site.
- DEG membership is 1,201.
