Meet Denise Cox, 2017 Candidate for AAPG President-Elect

I am honored to have been encouraged by colleagues, nominated by the Advisory Council and selected by the Executive Committee to stand for President-Elect of AAPG. AAPG has been a consistent resource throughout my career: As a graduate student, at Marathon Oil's Denver Research Center and in the "oil patch" working the Permian Basin and Mid-Continent, AAPG's publications, courses and conferences have enhanced my knowledge of the petroleum business and helped me build a professional network. As an international consultant and head of Storm Energy, Ltd, a small independent, AAPG continues to provide invaluable resources and industry contacts.

As a previous executive officer and chair of many committees for AAPG and other geoscience organizations, I understand the value of AAPG for members of local societies and the importance of connecting to AAPG as a global organization. Whether we are small independents or international petroleum companies, we benefit from globally-developed geologic concepts and applied technology. Likewise, AAPG stands to gain by coordination with local societies to implement successful research, education and outreach programs. AAPG is facing a challenging business and public environment. We need leadership who will make the best, and likely difficult, decisions to assure the future of our Association. AAPG's leadership needs to focus on these areas:

  • AAPG Business: Prioritize and allocate resources to the programs and services that are of greatest value to members as outlined in the three-year business plan.
  • Geoscience Research: Address the concept of petroleum resource sustainability to maintain AAPG's respected voice on scientific research and provide input on energy policy to a global economy aspiring to move toward renewable energy.
  • Public Outreach: Work with petroleum industry leaders to deliver a unified global message to academic institutions, government agencies and the public that advocates for the scientific research, environmentally sound technical excellence and professionalism of the petroleum industry.
  • Geoscience Careers: Consider a Geoscience Entrepreneur Program and "PetroPreneur" Expo that combines petroleum, energy minerals and environmental geoscience concepts with business and entrepreneurial skills to provide career employment options for students, experienced professionals and retired geoscientists.

To meet the challenges that face the petroleum industry today and for AAPG to thrive in the next 100 years, we need to respect the legacy of the pioneers who founded the Association while embracing the ideas of AAPG's increasingly diverse membership. These are the values that guide my service to AAPG and my commitment to the AAPG Foundation. They are the reasons I seek to serve AAPG's membership as President.
